Underdog effect (?)

What is it about pile-ons or judgmental groupthink that makes me love or root for a housewife more? This has happened quite a few times across franchises for me, even if I am not caught up or watching the current season. Examples: Erika, Brittani, Ramona, and, perhaps, Amanda? There's something about the hate that certain women attract from the subs and fandom that draws me deeper into their complexity and makes me enjoy them more to the point of absurd defensiveness. I root for them more than the generic sponge molds like Kyle and Gizelle. They are willing to light themselves on fire for our entertainment, and I appreciate that. I feel similarly towards Kristin Doute, and I understand their flaws. Still, there is something about the villainy from the fandom they attract that polishes their obvious roughness into a delectable reality gems whose gleam always catches my eye. Anyone else?
