My opinion on anime tourists

Discussion

During COVID anime became more popular and newcomers began watching only hype action shows. Real anime fans pointed out that there are other genres worth noticing, but they were only ignored and laughed at. How else would it end if real anime fans try to convince them to watch anime that are worse than your average shonen, not better?

They don’t want me to like actually good stuff like Legend of Galactic Heroes, Mushishi, Orb, Oddtaxi or Monster. No, they want me to appreciate men inappropriately touching women. Bonus points if a woman is 8 years old (looking at you, Monogatari). This is weird, but for them it’s a norm. They say I would bully them for liking anime 10 years ago, and they would be right. An outsider looks at anime as a whole and thinks: ‘what the hell is this thing?’

Now I see that anime is so much more. There are titles that actually try and there are titles that are worth nothing, so they goonbait the audience. It’s like jingling keys: ‘here, look at boobies, you like boobies?’ This is disrespectful. That’s not why I want to follow a story. Of course, there are exceptions, good shows with fanservice. In this case, I just try to ignore the annoying stuff, but the score of the title goes down by 1-2 points for me.

Bad tropes are a part of this medium, but it doesn’t mean I must like them to be a fan of anime. It’s like if I say: ‘I hate I have to read 500 notes and audio files to understand the lore of this videogame’ and get a response: ‘so, you hate videogames?’ Like, what? No!

Acknowledge that bad things are bad!
