From "I'll just record a few clicks" to 14 releases and a full timeline editor - my macro automation side project
Started this project because every macro recorder I tried was either:
- Paid with a terrible UI
- Free but recording only (no editing)
- Open-source but abandoned 5 years ago
So I built Macronyx - a cross-platform macro automation engine.
What started as a simple recorder turned into something with:
- Visual timeline editor (multi-track, drag-and-drop, grouping)
- Humanized playback with Bezier mouse curves
- Analytics dashboard tracking time saved
- Performance profiling (timing drift, P95 metrics)
- DPI-aware recording across multi-monitor setups
14 releases later, still actively developing.
Numbers so far: 14 GitHub stars, ~1000 clones in 2 weeks, 2 contributors.
Biggest lesson: scope creep is real, but sometimes the "unnecessary" features (like mouse path visualization) are what make people actually want to use it.
Would love your thoughts - what features would you prioritize next?
