What are demons and what are they made of?

Practical Questions

I've been studying Goetia and reading some books. I'm trying to see which ritual approach I adapt to best.

Ceremonial Goetia, whether from the Golden Dawn or Dr. Rudd, doesn't make much sense to me. The Judeo-Christian system of coercion/hierarchy doesn't resonate much with me, and besides, I don't believe in the act of calling out Hebrew names to coerce a daemon.

I read a bit about Crowley's Goetia, and I found it very psychologized. As if daemons were just parts of our minds, and this magical act is to get in touch with those parts so that they alter us and this causes results in the external world. In part, I believe that the work of internal change can generate changes, but that sounds a lot like therapy/shadow work.

I read a bit about Michael W. Ford, who presents daemons as divine masks, archetypes, or masks that the Luciferian magician embodies to cause changes in the world. To me, this sounds different from Goetia, such as, for example, ascension to god form. In other words, it's still confusing to me in practical terms.

I also considered demonolatry/demonology, but some sources link demons to gods of ancient cultures, and historically that makes sense. However, at the same time, the names and sigils would be epithets and not that ancient entity in essence. Which, in practice, would make more sense to me as the direct worship of the ancient deity.

What do you think?
