Bought a used 2019 Ram 1500 with a “clean” CARFAX — now finding accident repairs + possible mileage discrepancy. How do I verify this?
Hey everyone, looking for advice.
I bought a 2019 Ram 1500 from a used dealership. Carfax showed no accidents and everything seemed clean at the time.
After owning it a while, I started noticing things that look like prior repairs:
• Passenger front fender doesn’t line up properly
• Panel gaps suggest front-end work/collision
• Rear bumper looks replaced
• Duct tape marks from mounting rear bumper
• Tailgate isn’t bedlined like the rest of the bed
• Oil pan is far more corroded then it should be (Yes I know rams are awful for rotting pans but for a vehicle that had 70,000kms on it, it was a bit excessive)
So I’m already suspicious it may have had an undisclosed collision.
Then I ran the VIN through a US/Canada history check and saw something odd: It previously showed around 144,000 km, but when I bought it the truck only had 73,000 km and the date between me buying the truck and the mileage change was almost exactly a month.
I’m not 100% sure if this could be a reporting/miles-to-km issue between the US and Canada, so I don’t want to jump to conclusions but the numbers don’t really make sense either.
Before I accuse the dealer of anything, what’s the best way to verify the true mileage history?
• Is there a more reliable database than Carfax?
• Can dealers read stored mileage from modules?
• Anyone dealt with this before?
Honestly, I know I probably should’ve done a more thorough inspection before buying it. At the time it looked great, definitely one of those “10-footers” where it looks amazing from a distance.
With the clean CARFAX and a normal walk around/test drive, nothing obvious jumped out. It wasn’t until I’d owned it for a while and started really nitpicking panel gaps, paint, and small details and the “new car goggles” wore off, that the problems became noticeable and I began pulling on the thread until the real problems showed up. The thread being noticing the duct tape guarding the bed paint from the bumper.
I’m in Ontario, Canada.
Appreciate any guidance.
