I am a Medical Doctor coordinating international limb-lengthening surgeries. Here is the harsh truth about going abroad for the procedure.

Hi everyone,

I’m a Medical Doctor who coordinates complex orthopedic surgeries for international patients. I work closely with a senior orthopedic team (our lead surgeon has performed over 400 successful limb-lengthening surgeries and 4,000+ total orthopedic procedures).

Because I see the "behind-the-scenes" of this industry daily, I want to address the biggest trap I see patients fall into when traveling abroad for this surgery.

The Mistake: Obsessing over the surgical method, while completely ignoring the logistics of the recovery.

Here is the reality: The surgery itself (cutting the bone and placing the device) is only 30% of your journey. The remaining 70% is your daily physical therapy, flexibility management, and your living environment.

Many patients travel abroad to save money, choosing more affordable methods like External Fixation or LON. The surgery might go perfectly, but if they try to recover in a standard, cheap hotel room without proper medical transfers, and most importantly, without 1-on-1 daily specialized physical therapy, they are setting themselves up for disaster. Without aggressive PT, your muscles won't keep up with the bone growth, leading to severe stiffness, joint contractures, and a very painful experience.

My advice to anyone planning this:

Whether you are paying top dollar for internal PRECICE nailing in Europe, or going for the more accessible External Fixation/LON in other countries, do not compromise on your post-op care. Budget for the recovery, not just the operating room. Ensure you have daily PT and an accessible living setup for the entire 2-3 months.

A world-class surgeon paired with poor physical therapy will still lead to a poor functional outcome.

If anyone is currently in the planning phase and has questions about realistic timelines, hidden logistical costs, or how to prepare your body before surgery, feel free to ask in the comments or drop me a DM. I'm happy to provide some objective, medical insight to help you plan safely.

Stay safe and stretch daily!
