Psychic Vampires

So, I finally finished the Bill Hodges Trilogy, If It Bleeds, The Outsider, and Holly.

I know they are similar, and not entirely the same, but I'm seeing some parallels between the Ondowsky/El Cuco and the traveling band of the Steam-Suckers. The way they feed are similar, soaking in the essence of tragedy and pain, but the methods and abilities are different.

The Cuco creatures can shapeshift. It's been a few years since I read Doctor Sleep, but I don't recall the vampires there being able to shapeshift.

I guess what I'm getting at is are these creatures the same, or just similar? It felt worth having a discussion about as I wait patiently for my hold on my next King novel to come up.
