I made a similar post back in 2024, and now I’m trying to figure out where this neon obsession that occurred between 2015-2017, was going on at all but let’s theorise shall we.

As I was looking it up one term starting popping up more and more and that was millennial pink, you see the 2010s loved naming every trend after millennials even if there was no correlation. Millennial pink was used in a lot of lighting at that time including a lot of different filters on social media and lighting in fashion expos etc.

Another reason we saw the rise of minimalist neon aesthetics in the 2010s is artist James Turrell his art focuses heavily on minimalist geometric neon, such as triangles, squares and rectangles brightly lit with neon colours in rooms etc. he was mostly the blueprint for the style as most of the music videos of the time take after his style.

Vaporwave and the resurgence of the 80s, is another culprit of the rise, but this is more of a 2010s interpretation of the 80s, that got so big that it became it’s own art style and movement but mostly online.

Ok so one more theory I have is the rise of e-streamers and they would often adopt these neon colours considering the fact that most gaming PC’s use a ton of neon LED lights and streaming started growing more and more especially by 2016.

*These are only my* *theories**.*

Anyone know why 2016 had a neon aesthetic?
