CMV: Figure Skating (mostly in America) is a rich kid sport, often used to get the ultra-privileged into universities they wouldn't normally be able to attend.
The cost of ice time is extremely prohibitive, and only gets worse when you include the cost of training. Most families don't have to time required, let alone the thousands of dollars it costs per year to reach the top level. Most people who aren't trying to get their kid into Harvard, are not introducing their pre-teen to figure skating (the same can be said of a wide range of "sports", which have effectively become another way for the children of the rich/elite to avoid any real meritocracy).
I have am having a hard time celebrating the Olympic victories of a rich trophy kid, who is representing a country that is looking more and more evil right now... When in reality if there were equal access to ice time/coaching, the sport wouldn't be just a bunch of rich white/Asian kids with helicopter parents pushing them the entire time.
