What is RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) and why is everyone using it for AI chatbots?

Discussion

I keep seeing people talk about RAG when building AI chatbots and SaaS products, so I wanted to understand it properly and share a simple explanation. RAG stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation. It means instead of relying only on the LLM’s internal knowledge, the system first retrieves relevant information from external data (like PDFs, databases, or documents) and then gives that information to the LLM to generate a more accurate answer. In simple words: Retrieve relevant data → Give it to LLM → LLM generates answer. Why this matters: Normal LLMs can hallucinate or give incorrect answers. They also don’t know your private data like company documents, policies, or notes. With RAG, the model searches your data first and then answers based on that, which makes it much more accurate and useful. Example: If you build a chatbot for a company and ask: “What is the refund policy?” Without RAG: it gives a generic answer. With RAG: it reads the company’s refund policy document and gives the exact answer. Basic workflow: Collect documents (PDF, text, database, etc.) Convert text into embeddings Store embeddings in a vector database (FAISS, Pinecone, ChromaDB) User asks question System retrieves relevant data LLM generates answer using retrieved data This is why RAG is used in: – AI customer support chatbots – AI document assistants – Website chatbots – Knowledge base assistants – Resume analyzers
