is it just me or is the local dfw scene totally abysmal?
I’m a local musician born and raised in Fort Worth, and just finding myself more and more disappointed with the local music scene not just in Fort Worth, but in DFW as a whole entity. Year after year, good alternative local venues (Lola’s, MASS, Andy’s, etc.) close their doors and I lose hope. I thank the heavens for Rubber Gloves every day truly, because it seems like one of the only accessible, community uplifting, all-genres-welcome venue in a bajillion mile radius. I am sick and tired of awesome venues being shut down and turned into overpriced, gross millenial-run restaurants. I am tired of 90% of open venues seeming to be incompetent on how to foster a good local alternative community. Country band after metal band after cover band full of 40-something’s who bore everyone to tears. No experimenting, exchanging of ideas, room for growth. I mean for god sakes this is a college town, full of young creative people. I am also somewhat thankful for Tulips, but this takes me back to the lack of accessibility. Most shows run around $30-$40 ticket prices for larger “niche” bands, and despite attempting a “$2 Tuesday Local Music” event each week, there is no real takeoff or initiative to book bands that have a following/present something unique and interesting to the table. Any advice for how to tackle this as a broke and passionate local?
