Did Apple change the materials used to make the ear pads when moving APM over to USB C?

I bought a new set of purple ear cushions (directly from Apple) because my previous red ones were all gross from years of use and the glue had come undone trying to clean them

These new ones are really scratchy and irritable and not enjoying them
