When is it time to just let a dad group go?
Hey dads — looking for some perspective.
For a couple of years, I met up regularly with a few other dads at a McDonald’s playground. Our kids are all in the 4–7 range and generally had fun together.
Recently, the group basically dissolved. There were a few tensions — one involved a past incident where a kid fell and later got a concussion, and months later I was told my daughter may have pushed him. At the time, no one brought that up. It only came up much later, and the way it was handled ended with me being blocked and cut off without much discussion.
I’ll own this: the last few years of my life have been stressful. I’m in a long divorce process, and while I try not to bring that energy into social settings, I’m sure some of it shows up. I’m way more intense than I used to be. I’m very hands-on about correcting behavior immediately when I see it, and I can see how that might feel different compared to other dads who are more relaxed.
I guess what I’m trying to figure out is:
- When a dad group fractures like this, do you try to repair it?
- Or do you take it as a sign it’s time to find a better fit?
- How much self-reflection is healthy here vs. overanalyzing?
Part of me thinks it might be a blessing in disguise — maybe the vibe wasn’t aligned anymore. But I also don’t want to miss something I should be learning about myself as a parent or friend.
Appreciate any honest input.
