Vyvanse side effects (maybe/maybe not) and advice on how to move forward
So towards the end of last year I finally visited with a psychiatrist for the first time in my life at 25 years old and found out I might have a few things going on in my meat computer. I’ve always struggled with my weight but due to my upbringing I just chalked it up to a very complicated combination of bad luck, bad habits, and laziness. Throughout my teens and twenties, I’ve been extremely conscious about my weight and looked for the so-called cure. I lost 80 lbs on nutrisystem, gained it all back as soon as I stopped dieting. I lost 75 lbs twice doing a keto diet and gained it all back, and then some. I do not have a good relationship with food. Come to find out at my meetings with my psychiatrist, I meet the criteria for binge eating disorder. And to go along with that, generalized anxiety disorder. At my next visit, I also find out I meet the criteria for inattentive ADHD.
The anxiety was the most immediately pressing issue so we work on that one first, starting with SSRIs then settling on 150mg of Wellbutrin due to more favorable side effects. Next we attempt to tackle the ADHD since the more affordable weight loss medications also tend to be stimulants and that could be doubly productive. I start Vyvanse and get to 30mg and I’m not noticing much difference in my ADHD symptoms like focus or executive dysfunction but holy shit I don’t think about food at all. After a few days of this effect I start to realize that I may have found the thing that can get me over the hump to motivate my weight loss to a more permanently manageable state. Unfortunately after about a week I have a scare while at work where I feel my heart beating harder and faster than normal. My family doesn’t have a good history for heart health so I head to the hospital and have them check me out. Basically, it was inconclusive on what caused it and the doctor told me my heart was in good shape with no blockage. I tell my psych and we stop the Vyvanse and move onto non-stimulant options. For instance, I have been taking Topiramate for a few weeks now. I was disappointed but I hated feeling my heart do that.
Fast forward to just a few weeks ago. I am at work alone and I’ve been off of stimulants for over three months and the same thing happens. A little less severe but basically the same heavy beating, elevated heart rate event while doing nothing but sitting at work. The next few days I start to think about it and wonder if maybe the Vyvanse didn’t cause it and maybe it’s an anxiety attack or something that has nothing to do with this stimulant.
Sorry for being longwinded but I feel like the details could be important. Basically, all of this is to ask if anyone else has a similar experience and how they tackled or overcame a hurdle like this. I’d love to hear your experiences with Vyvanse, weight loss, and/or anxiety and how they relate!
Tldr: Started Vyvanse, it helped a lot with food noise. Had a scare with high heart rate, chest pressure. Stopped Vyvanse. Had the same episode months after stopping, wondering how/or if Vyvanse is even related to this.
