Rankings in BATTLESECTOR : A matter of Philosophy
I really like these discussions — it’s a very interesting topic. This situation comes up often with WH40k video games. They are inspired by the tabletop hobby rather than being strict adaptations, and Battlesector is actually one of the closest examples: turn-based gameplay, point-based army building, and a scale that strongly reflects Warhammer 40,000.
However, the hobby has always been about more than gameplay mechanics. It’s about sharing — painting minis, creating maps or scenery, taking screenshots, and being part of a community. Because of that, I don’t think there should be a player ranking system outside of tournaments.
In tabletop Warhammer, winning or losing isn’t the core experience; sharing time with other players is. Games Workshop has never structured the hobby around ranking people by performance, and introducing rankings would shift the focus away from community toward competition.
So while rankings make sense in theory, they go against the spirit of the hobby. This isn’t just a game design decision — it’s a decision about a way of playing. When two strangers deploy their armies, they meet as equals sharing the same hobby, and that’s a big part of why this community works.
