Should I mod my 3ds now?

So I just bought an old 3ds 2nd hand and I was planning to mod it. I'm new to the 3ds itself and was waiting for my SD card from a not-so-reputable band to arrive before modding it. But while messing with this 3ds, I saw that it already had a 2gb SD card inserted on it, and I saw online that it is better to mod it to the SD card it has then transfer it later to the bigger ones. Should I mod it now and just transfer it later when the SD card arrives or should I wait for the SD card? And if I do wait for the SD card to arrive, will there be any risks if I mod my 3ds using that?
