Left to right: Oscar Isaac, Robert Pattinson, James McAvoy, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Anya Taylor-Joy

I made a post a week ago about actors you are surprised were never nominated (so focusing on deceased and retired actors), so I thought about making a post about actors who certainly could still get nominated, but you are surprised haven't yet.

Maybe they've given performances that have been snubbed, or they have demonstrated the talent, but just haven't had the right role yet.

Explanations for my pictures:

* Oscar Isaac is an incredible, versatile actor and I feel he's given several roles that were both Oscar-worthy but also the sorts of things Oscars like to nominate. I really thought this was his year - I know some people thought he was over-the-top in *Frankenstein*, but I thought his performance perfectly fit the role, had a lot of depth and it was a film that was doing well with awards anyway.
* Robert Pattinson, another fantastic, versatile actor. I think he'll definitely get nominated at some point, but I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. For example, *Marty Supreme* got a lead actor nomination, but *Good Time* didn't.
* James McAvoy: to be honest, I was sure he'd been nominated for *Split*. No, he hasn't it seems.
* Jim Carrey, though mostly known for his comedic work (not that that's inferior, nor that it should be kept out of Oscar discourse, but it's not the usual sort of acting the Oscars go for), has given several great and acclaimed performances in more dramatic works. I'm shocked he wasn't nominated for *The Truman Show, Man on the Moon* or *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.*
* Adam Sandler is once again more known for his comedic work, but as his roles in things like *Punch Drunk Love* and *Uncut Gem*s can show you, he can be great in more dramatic work as well. Once again, with *Marty Supreme* doing well, it makes Sandler's lack of a nomination for *Uncut Gem*s all the more surprising.
* Anya Taylor-Joy is one of my favourite actresses of her generation. She's definitely going to get a nomination in the future (she's going to be in a Joni Mitchell biopic with Meryl Streep, and if she's good in it, that's the sort of thing that gets you a nomination), but I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. That said, most of her best work has been in television and horror, so it's not too surprising.
