Student loan advice. Move out of parents?
Hello! Was looking for advice on my current situation. I am 28 years old and two 1/2 years into my career as a nurse. I have a good/stable income and pretty much a stable career. I made the decision to move back in with my parents in late November of ‘25 because I do have significant debt. I paid off my car in December and I am almost done paying off my 10,000$ of credit card debt. That will be done the first week of April. After that, I need to tackle my student loans. I have 150k of student loans. 42,000 are federal and the rest are private. I have no savings, but I have little to no bills. I just have a 40$ gym membership, 111$ storage unit for my apartment furniture, and my student loan minimums.
With that being said, I have been given the opportunity to move in with my best friend in July of 2026. Rent would be 900$ a person and about 50$ for WiFi and about 50$ for power. It is a 28 minute commute to work and in a walkable downtown area. I would be able to save about 10k before moving out in July. However, I really need to get these loans paid off. I don’t want to be 40 and still paying these loans. If I stayed with my parents, I could pay off my biggest loan of 59k at 7.18% interest by June 2027. If I moved in with my friend I could pay it by may 2028. So I can still pay it very quickly, it’s just delayed. However, I would like to get out of my parents house and have independence again. I can’t be here forever. Is it worth staying the extra year with my parents ? Or should I not pass the opportunity up to live with my best friend and still have affordable living costs?
