From the 17th to the early 20th century, Austria-Hungary made only a few attempts at overseas expansion, and none of them lasted long. Unlike other European powers, the empire mostly focused on trade, concessions, and small settlements rather than full-fledged colonies. Many of these efforts failed because of pressure from other countries, internal politics, or simply a lack of interest from Hungary, leaving Austria-Hungary with a very limited presence abroad compared to Britain, France, or Spain.

In Europe, the empire’s overseas ambitions were mostly limited to Bosnia and Herzegovina, which it controlled from 1867 to 1918, a key factor in its entry into World War I. Earlier, Austria benefited indirectly from Spain’s vast empire when Charles V ruled both realms, but Austria itself never held large colonies. Hungarian resistance and international pressure often blocked Austrian plans for expansion, keeping the empire’s European influence mostly regional.

In Africa, Austria-Hungary tried to establish trade and settlements along the southeastern coast, particularly in Delagoa Bay (modern Mozambique) in the late 18th century under William Bolts. They built forts and traded ivory, and even took part in the slave trade briefly, but the Portuguese quickly expelled them. The empire also gained free docking rights in African ports through the Berlin Conference of 1884–1885 and explored the idea of acquiring Rio de Oro, though nothing came of it.

In Asia, Austria-Hungary focused on trading posts and concessions rather than colonies. The Ostend East India Company operated in India and China in the early 18th century, trading in ports like Mocha, Surat, and Canton before political pressure shut it down. Later, Austria-Hungary acquired North Borneo through Baron von Overbeck but sold it to the British. The empire also held a small concession in Tianjin, China, from 1902 to 1917 as part of its role in the Boxer Rebellion. Attempts to settle the Nicobar Islands failed, and expeditions to places like Franz Josef Land show the empire was more interested in exploration than permanent colonial rule.
