Theory: Sophie is Abby’s Sexual Awakening

Sophie might represent Abby’s sexual awakening. At Battle of the Bands, Sophie’s musician friend Scott was the first guy Abby felt attracted to, aside from Press who treated her poorly. Abby was attracted to Scott, but it’s also possible that her resentment toward Sophie comes from being attracted to her as well. From the very beginning, even when Max was crushing on Sophie, Abby had a negative attitude toward Sophie, and that didn’t change while Max and Sophie were dating and after they broke up.

Scott and Press were both guys Abby was attracted to, but they had very different personalities. Press treated her poorly and appears to have little ambition and a life outside his friends, spending his time playing video games and hanging out in Brodie’s basement. Scott, on the other hand, appeared to have hobbies, goals, and a life outside of his friends, and he probably would have treated Abby with respect if they had gotten together.

What if Abby and Sophie got together to make Max realize she still has feelings for Sophie? They could pretend to be a couple, using the classic “fake dating” trope to spark Max’s jealousy and push Max to confront her emotions, but unlike the typical fake-dating storyline, neither Abby nor Sophie would end up developing real romantic feelings for each other.

I know Sophie is going to college, but it would actually be easier for her and Abby to fake date because they could pretend to be in a long-distance relationship, which would help them keep up the facade longer without raising any suspicion.
