14. San Diego Padres

BA Grade: 55

Player movement was the name of the game in San Diego, as it is most seasons and offseasons under president of baseball operations AJ Preller. Gone are Dylan Cease, Luis Arraez and Robert Suarez. In are Nick Castellanos, German Marquez, Miguel Andujar and KBO import infielder Sung-Mun Song. Michael King re-signed as the club’s top starter, and Joe Musgrove returns from Tommy John surgery to join Nick Pivetta to give San Diego a solid top three in front of a lockdown bullpen. Right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., center fielder Jackson Merrill and third baseman Manny Machado are back to drive the offense.

Player Development Wins: Merrill is the only truly homegrown Padre, though Tatis has never played a game for another organization following an early-career trade from the White Sox. Still, there are Padres draft picks scattered across MLB, including MacKenzie Gore, Ryan Weathers, CJ Abrams and James Wood.

Key Rookies: Song played third base and second base in Korea and has played first base in the past.

MLB 100 Players (6): #14 Fernando Tatis Jr. RF, #38 Jackson Merrill CF, #58 Manny Machado 3B, #66 Mason Miller CL, #93 Xander Bogaerts SS, #98 Nick Pivetta RHP
