How are you supposed to get home after a night out an hour away?

Assuming you go somewhere an hour's drive away and public transit isn't a straight shot, and you have at least 1 drink, how do people expect you to go home? Or is it expected to stay over at a hotel or friend's house every time? Just curious because I feel like this is a very common situation but people are either just driving buzzed or not going at all. Hotel seems like the best option but it doesn't actually seem popular. Are you supposed to stay up the whole night and then down caffeine to drive back the next day?
