I woke up to my house whispering my name.

I woke up to my house whispering my name. I don’t know if I should post this, I don’t know if anyone will believe me, but I can’t keep it to myself. Last night started normal, I went to bed around 11, lights out, phone on the nightstand, dog at my feet. Around 1:30 I woke up because my bedroom door was slightly ajar, and I know I closed it before sleeping. At first I thought maybe I had been half-asleep when I left it open, but something felt off, like the air was heavier, like the room was holding its breath. I didn’t move, I just lay there, heart thudding, and then I heard it. My name. Just barely audible, a whisper, my own voice almost, but not quite. “Trystan…” It came again, clearer this time, from the direction of the hallway. I froze, couldn’t breathe, my dog growled low in his throat. I told myself it was a dream, that maybe I had muttered my own name in my sleep, but then the whispering started coming from the living room, then the kitchen, moving like it was walking through the house. I grabbed my phone, flicked the flashlight on, and I swear I could see the shadows stretching across the walls differently than usual, darker, longer, like they were reaching. I tiptoed toward the hallway, trying to convince myself it was just the wind or the house settling, but every step I took it whispered my name again, this time right behind me, almost in my ear, and the dog bolted toward the living room, barking like I’ve never heard him bark. I followed, flashlight shaking, and the whispers stopped. Absolute silence. I thought maybe it was over, maybe I’d just been imagining it. Then I noticed the kitchen window. I always keep it locked. Locked. And it was wide open, curtains flapping, the latch broken. I swear no one could have been in my backyard, nothing out there but darkness. I ran back to my bedroom, slammed the door, locked it, and sat on the floor with my dog pressed against me, trying to catch my breath, heart hammering. Around 3 AM, I heard it again, soft, deliberate footsteps coming up the stairs, slow and heavy, like someone was pacing right outside my door. I wanted to call the police, but my phone was dead. I don’t know why, I charged it before bed. The whispers started again, now right under the door, hundreds of tiny voices all saying my name at once, overlapping, echoing. My dog started growling like mad, scratching at the door, barking, snarling, and then silence. I think I fell asleep eventually, I don’t remember. When I woke up, everything was back to normal, the window closed, the door unlocked, the house quiet. I tried to rationalize it, sleepwalking, dream, hallucination, anything. But then I found something on my nightstand, a note written in my own handwriting that I definitely didn’t write, it said, “We’ve been waiting for you.” I don’t know who “we” is, I don’t know what they want, and I don’t know if I’ll sleep tonight. I can still hear the faint echo of my name when I close my eyes.
