Is the hold to auto avoid patched?

I'm a newbie in this game at the switch 1 and I always manually flick the joystick to avoid, now I watched a youtube sifu tips video, and it said I hold to avoid but when playing this is not happening it just blocks. Is this patched thats why it blocks, im just a bit confused.
