OEM+ / factory-style upgrades for Jeep XJ (1984–1996) — plug-and-play + “Jeep parts-bin” mods

Hey all here’s a running list of OEM-ish upgrades for 1984–96 Cherokee XJs. The goal is stuff that looks/feels factory, uses existing holes/wiring when possible, or is a common Jeep parts-bin swap.

Add your favorites (and part numbers/links if you’ve got them) in the comments.

Steering / Handling

•	ZJ steering upgrade (tie rod/drag link)

Beefier linkage vs. stock, still Jeep OEM parts-bin.

•	Rear bump stops / load support

•	SumoSprings (or similar progressive bump-stop helpers)

•	Alternative options welcome (Timbrens, extended bump stops, etc.)

Interior (OEM+ comfort / convenience)

•	Footwell lights — direct plug-in

If your harness supports it, this is one of the cleanest “modern” upgrades.

•	Overhead console upgrade (interior mod)

•	Often requires buying a front overhead console bracket

•	May require modifying the front dome light bracket depending on your setup

•	Front cupholder

•	The Etsy cupholder seems like a better-designed alternative than the common Amazon one (fit/use of space).

•	Rear cupholders (Etsy)

Nice for back seat passengers without looking too “aftermarket.”

•	Overhead sunglasses holder (Etsy)

Surprisingly factory-looking if you match the interior color.

•	Rear dome light

•	The plug is usually already there, just hidden by the headliner board.

Audio

•	Sound bar

•	If your Jeep came with rear hatch speakers, you may already have the plug you can use with a sound bar harness

•	Sound can be better with a soundbar, especially with cargo in the trunk vs. rear “half speakers”

Engine / Reliability

•	4-hole fuel injector upgrade

Often improves idle/smoothness.

•	Engine coolant filter

Great if you’re cleaning up an older cooling system.

•	Transmission oil cooling

•	Add/upgrade a transmission cooler (cheap insurance in heat, towing, or slow crawling)

• Cruise control. Can find the part from the junk yard or eBay. Would require changing the turn signal switch that has a cruise control button. The plug is usually inside the steering column.

• big 7 wire upgrade

What else belongs on an OEM+ list?

Drop your best factory-looking upgrades: lighting, switches, junkyard finds, “hidden” plugs, etc. Bonus points if it’s plug-and-play.
