What to prioritize when choosing a PhD program?
I wanted to come on here and ask for some advice deciding which PhD program I should choose (hopefully this is okay to post here). I've interviewed at 3 different schools for genetics PhD programs and I've been accepted to 2 (still waiting to hear back on the last one). Assuming I get into all 3, I'm struggling to decide what I should prioritize in my decision
Two of the schools have very elite genetics programs and a lot of research I'm interested in, but I wasn't crazy about the general cultures at the institutions. They're also both in my home state, and I'm kinda itching to leave. The other program is out of state in an amazing location, but the program isn't quite as good and I'm not as interested in the research there. However, the graduate student culture generally seems more laid back and supportive.
I guess I'm just wondering what others prioritized when choosing a program?? I guess I have to give up something no matter what I choose, but I'm curious how others made that decision. Honestly I'm just super burnt out in my current lab so I really want to get that work life balance back (even though that's probably nonexistent as a grad student...) but I also want to go to a good program with great opportunities. I also know my overall experience will depend a lot on what lab I join, so maybe the overall program isn't that big of a deal? Idk... any advice???
