Creative hub for home Ed young people
Please delete if not allowed as I don’t want to break any rules.
Hi all,
I’m a qualified youth worker and music producer based in the South West, and I’m in the early thinking stages of setting up a small creative hub for home educated young people (roughly 11–16).
Through my work, I’ve found home educated young people are not getting the chance to experience these kind of creative arts as it requires specialist equipment that is very expensive.
The idea would be very small groups (4–6 max) and focus on things like:
• Music creation & production
• Podcasting / audio storytelling
• Filmmaking and editing
• Collaborative projects rather than “lessons”
It would be delivered in a professional studio setup within a youth centre.
It wouldn’t be school style or exam led, more about confidence, self-expression, collaboration, and practical skills, with plenty of flexibility for neurodivergent young people.
Before I go any further, I’d really value parents perspectives on a few things:
• Is this the kind of provision you’d actually look for, or does it already feel oversaturated?
• What matters most to you when choosing an external group? (cost, qualifications, safeguarding, outcomes, atmosphere, flexibility, etc.)
• For teens especially, what do you feel is missing from what’s currently available?
• Would you prefer short blocks, term-length sessions, or something more drop-in?
• And honestly what would put you off something like this?
I’m not promoting anything at this stage I’m genuinely trying to work out whether this would be useful rather than just “nice on paper.”
Really appreciate any insight, even if it’s “this wouldn’t work for us and here’s why.”
Thanks for reading.
