What are your thoughts? Is my reaction normal? Will there be any chance?

Advice

I had an ex of 7 years, and it was mostly crumbs and cheating. But despite everything, what we had felt real. We had our ups and downs, but eventually we just fell out of love.

In my current relationship, he showed a lot of effort. He was also cheated on in the past, though he had hookups after that and before me. He would drive more than 2 hours back and forth just to see me weekly. He gave me flowers, gifts, and was very sweet. But after only a month, he cheated.

The other girl didn’t know he was taken, but she knew he was pursuing someone. She may not have received flowers or dates, but he still met her during his free time, even if it’s only in parking lots. They talked the way he talked to me, kissed, and slept together once. It stopped when she found out I existed. She got angry and cursed at him. He lied to calm her down and prevent confrontation.

About a month later, she got mad again after seeing our posts and how much effort he was making for me. A week before Valentine’s, she exposed everything and told me he cheated.

At that moment, I didn’t know what to feel. We were literally talking about where I would stay for my internship — which is at his workplace — and then everything suddenly collapsed. After I saw the messages, I didn’t reply. The whole day, I couldn’t think clearly. I couldn’t even eat without feeling like vomiting. It felt like I was love-bombed and that nothing was real.

Two days later, I replied. We met. I didn’t shout or cry like the other girl, or like I used to in past relationships. I even smiled at times while asking for details. He said it wasn’t serious at the start and that we only got to know each other deeply recently — which, in some way, I agreed with.

We decided to try starting over. We acted normal again — we talked like nothing happened and even became physically intimate multiple times. But after that one meeting, something changed in me. I became calm, but I also stopped feeling attracted to him.

I haven’t let go yet, mostly because I don’t want him trying to talk to my classmates. I’m planning to wait until our clerkship ends before deciding. Part of me also wants him to have no access to other girls, especially since he even made me his profile picture.

I don’t know what to make of my reaction. Is this normal? And is there still a chance for us if he really doubles his effort?
