Are the battleships of the Gundam franchise just death traps for the hundreds of Souls that work aboard them?

Every time I've seen battleships get destroyed it always seems that there's no window for anyone to get to like an Escape pod or something, which is concerning since that's a good bunch of people just gone. Is the plan in case your ship's about to scuttle is to just put on a space suit and pray?
