Safdie brothers and humiliation

Thinking on the spanking and the pig kissing punishment scenes of “Marty Supreme”, I realized how being exposed vulnerably in front of others is a recurring aspect in their filmography.

There are numerous scenes of their characters ”failing” while surrounded by people. Just at the top of my head I have as example: Howard slapped by Phil in his store next to his employees in “Uncut Gems” and Connie witnessing how his plan to use Corey’s credit card to bail Nick goes to the toilet next to the bail bondsman and his wife in “Good Time”.

Even their characters having public discussions in the streets like in “Daddy Longlegs” and “Heaven Knows What” are part of this.

I also remember Josh citing “Candide” by Voltaire as a reference for “Good Time” structure. I haven’t read it, but I do know the eponymous gets degraded constantly.

What are your thoughts? Are there other directors that used humilliation recurringly in their films too?
