My ex will never walk again, and I'm relieved

So, 12 years ago I was in an abusive relationship. We were together for five years. He had started out as my best friend in high school, and when I came out of the closet as gay, he came out a few weeks later as being bi and we started dating.

For the most part during the relationship, he was still my best friend. But, he was also emotionally manipulative and was a regular cheater. Every time I found out about it I kept telling myself it was fine because at least it was only ever with women and he always came home to me. And rarely, but occasionally, he was physically abusive.

Anyway, one day I get a call. He's in jail. He had gone over to hook up with one of the women he cheated with, and when he got there she had murdere her landlord. She was still holding the knife, and she insisted that he drive her away. The body was discovered shortly later, and the witness had seen the car they left in, so they got pulled over. She is in jail for life, he got sentenced to 15 years.

It was maybe a year after that I met my now-husband. My life has been great, and I've been so happy. Honestly, the fucker being arrested was probably the best thing to ever happen to me. Anyway, the fucker eventually got released early for good behavior. When I found out, I honestly did a bit of a panic. I was terrified of what would happen if I randomly ran into him somewhere. Anyway, I just found out that back a couple months ago he was in a horrific car accident, and it's thought he will never walk again.

Even after all this time, there's a small part of me that still cares for him and is devastated on his behalf. But there's an even larger part of me that is frankly relieved that he won't be able to hurt people anymore, not in the same ways at least.

So yeah, that's my confession. I'm relieved that my ex has lost the use of his body from the waist down.
