Reed strength

So I just got done reading about this kid having problems with squeaking when playing. Reed strength came into the picture. It got me thinking. MC and reeds play an important part in playing, everyone is looking for the best combination. I understand that mostly it is unique to the individual but is there some common symptoms of what you can experience when playing a reed that is too hard or soft for you?
