Squad chat issues

I've mainly been playing solos since I started but a few friends have recently gotten the game so lately I've tried Duos.

Last night no matter what I tried I couldn't get the squad chat to work with my friend. I could hear him just fine but he couldn't hear me until we were in the game and I turned on prox chat.

Is there a setting I'm missing or is this just an issue that pops up for folks?
