Nepali but Not “Nepali” Enough? Can anyone relate?

Random Thoughts

I moved abroad in my early teens with my family and now I’m in my late 20s, about to turn 30 this year. And honestly… finding someone Nepali has been way harder than I ever imagined. I’ve tried talking to people from Nepal, but the mindset gap feels huge. Sometimes it feels like we grew up in completely different worlds. Either the values and expectations don’t align or there’s just a big disconnect in how we see relationships, independence, communication, and life in general. On the other hand, with Nepalis who grew up abroad like me, I sometimes feel like we’ve either become too westernized in ways that don’t align with what I’m looking for or we’ve overcorrected and hold onto things in a rigid way. It’s like I don’t fully fit into either side.

I’m not unhappy on my own. I have a stable life, I socialize a lot, I have gone solo travel lots at this point, and I genuinely enjoy my independence. But I didn’t think it would be this hard to find someone culturally compatible. And for me, cultural compatibility matters a lot. I’m not really open to dating outside my culture, not because I look down on it, but because I know who I am and what kind of shared background and understanding I want in a partner. At this point in my life, I’m very clear about that. But sometimes I wonder… will I even find someone who gets this in-between identity? Someone who understands both the Nepali side and the experience of growing up abroad? Is anyone else in the same boat? How are you navigating this?
