In the Lantern Flower Forest, lights often gathered in twos and threes.

Thorne the fox had grown close to Lira the deer. They walked lantern paths together. They shared quiet evenings near the stream. Their connection felt warm and steady.

One dusk, Thorne saw something that tightened his chest.

Lira was laughing with Rowan the stag.

They stood close. Too close, Thorne thought. The lantern flowers around them glowed softly, and Rowan’s voice carried warmth.

A flicker sparked inside Thorne.

It was sharp.

Hot.

Uncomfortable.

He did not like it.

His first thought was quick and dangerous:

“If she is close to him, she will move away from me.”

The flicker grew.

He imagined stepping between them.

Claiming his place.

Asking Lira why she needed anyone else.

But the forest spirits stirred low in the roots.

“Jealousy is not a command. It is a question.”

Thorne paused.

Instead of stepping forward, he stepped back.

He sat beneath a lantern flower and listened to the feeling instead of acting on it.

The feeling said:

I am afraid of being replaced.

I want to feel secure.

I want to matter.

None of those were wrong.

Across the clearing, Lira eventually walked toward him.

“You look quiet,” she said gently.

Thorne swallowed his pride. “When I saw you with Rowan, I felt afraid.”

Lira tilted her head. “Afraid of what?”

“That I would lose you.”

Lira stepped closer — not because she was owned, but because she chose to.

“You do not lose me because I speak with another,” she said. “My connections are not pieces of food to divide. They are paths. Walking one does not erase another.”

Thorne felt the tightness loosen slightly.

“But it hurts,” he admitted.

“I know,” she said. “Feelings are not wrong. What matters is what you build from them.”

Above them, the fairies whispered:

“Jealousy becomes control when fear tries to cage what it loves.

It becomes growth when fear is spoken instead of enforced.”

Over the next days, Thorne practiced something new.

When he felt comparison rising, he asked himself: Am I asking for reassurance, or am I trying to restrict? Do I want connection, or control?

Sometimes he asked Lira for closeness directly.

Sometimes he simply reminded himself that choice is what makes love real.

And something unexpected happened.

When he stopped trying to narrow her world, she moved toward him more freely.

Not because she was obligated.

But because she felt safe.

The lantern flowers glowed brighter that season — not from possession, but from trust.

And Thorne learned:

Jealousy is a messenger.

Control is a reaction.

Freedom is a decision.

The Lesson for the Forest

The fairies would later teach it plainly:

	•	You may feel jealousy. It is human and animal.

	•	You may not restrict another’s autonomy to soothe it.

	•	Speak fear. Do not enforce it.

	•	Ask for reassurance. Do not demand isolation.

	•	Love chosen daily is stronger than love guarded tightly.
