i'm 18 and built my first app because my mom kept yelling at me for wasting food
hey r/SideProject, first time posting here
so basically i'm 18, vietnamese, and my mom has been on my case my entire life about wasting food. growing up she'd go through the fridge every few days and if she found anything expired she'd give me this look that could end a man
anyway i moved into a shared apartment and turns out... she was right. i was terrible at keeping track of what i had. id buy stuff, shove it in the fridge, forget about it, find it weeks later looking sad, throw it away. repeat
i actually tracked how much food i was throwing away for a month. came out to like $47. im working part time so thats a LOT for me
i tried using some calorie/food tracking apps but they all had the same problem. none of them knew what half my food was. try logging bún bò huế or chả lụa or even just fish sauce in most apps and u get nothing. or it gives u some random american version thats completely wrong nutritionally
so i spent a few months building my own thing. its called FreshTrack
what it does:
- track whats in ur fridge/pantry
- get alerts before stuff expires so u actually use it in time
- barcode scanning that actually works with vietnamese products. most apps dont even recognize asian brand barcodes
- shows u what to use first based on expiry dates
built with expo/react native so it runs on ios and android. backend is nothing fancy, just wanted something that works. the hardest part was getting barcode scanning to actually work with vietnamese products. most food apps only support US/EU barcodes so i integrated with openfoodfacts vietnam which has way better coverage for asian stuff
theres a free tier. 25 items, no credit card, no strings. thats enough for a small fridge which is all i have rn. if u need unlimited its $4.99/mo or $39/yr
im honestly just looking for feedback. this is my first real app and i know theres stuff to improve. the food database especially, im always adding more items but im sure im missing stuff people actually eat
anyone who wants to try it: https://freshtrackapp.xyz
id love to hear what u think even if its brutal. first app, still learning, and i want to make it actually useful
thanks for reading this far lol
