Spotify on iOS starts playing on its own?

I rehearse with a band and our guitarist will often play bits of the song we are covering on his iPhone. He stops playback and sets the phone down. Then while we are rehearsing it'll just start playing again for no apparent reason. He's turned of Siri in case that was it but to no avail. Any guesses?
