“Sensei,” Chapter 15

by c.w. cobblestone

My favorite yacht rock song, “What a Fool Believes,” came on the radio, although one of the speakers in Monica’s car had a rip in it, and the music was spoiled by a buzzing sound.

Sigh. More piss in the punchbowl.

I pushed the radio’s off-button and squinted at Steve’s SUV on the road ahead. The family had decided to ride with him to the car dealership while I drove Monica’s old car to trade in — not that it would be worth much. Peering through the windshield at Steve’s expensive Range Rover, I felt embarrassed that my wife had been forced to drive such a rusty piece of shit.

Ugh. Mr. Perfect to the rescue yet again — just like when he first came into our lives and knocked out the thug who was choking me.

Even worse for my ego, he was also buying Taylor a new car, after I’d been unable to afford replacing her old one when it conked out. And, because Brianna and Kendell got jealous, “Super Steve” promised he’d get them each something special, too, since they weren’t old enough to drive.

I should’ve been happy for the females in my life, since they were all walking on Cloud 9. Instead, their joy only made me feel more isolated.

Then there was the matter of Steve’s herbal concoction. When he came to the house after work earlier, he had it mixed up and ready to go, but I wasn’t quite ready to drink it. He wasn’t pressuring me to try it — but Monica was. Before being sent to the guest room the previous evening (without getting to watch them have sex), the last thing she’d said to me was: “Good night, sweetie. You’re going to try Steve’s drink tomorrow, right?”

She was desperate for our three-way relationship to work, and since Steve had been right about literally everything, she figured if I drank the elixir, the delicate path we were navigating would go a lot smoother. When I balked at drinking it, she clearly wasn’t happy, and gave me the cold shoulder.

I, too, was desperate — desperate to please her and go along, because I knew the consequences: If it became too difficult to maintain this situation, I’d be gone in a New York minute. But I was still hesitant. I had no way of knowing whether Steve had slipped something in the drink without telling me; female hormones, maybe. Or maybe he was minimizing the concoction’s effect, and I’d end up growing boobs or something.

With my head full of clutter, I followed Steve’s SUV into Rockway Elite Ford off I-64. I nosed Monica’s car into a parking spot next to his SUV, and got out to stretch my legs.

The family spilled from Steve’s Range Rover, laughing about some private joke. Although I had no idea what was so funny, I forced myself to smile with the rest of them.

Brianna handed me her empty McDonald’s cup. “Here, throw that away, Pattycakes.”

Monica scowled. “What have I told you?”

My middle daughter huffed. “Ugh, Pattycakes, will you throw it away, please?”

“That’s better,” Monica said.

I dropped the cup in the trashcan near the dealership office, then hurried to catch up with the others.

Monica and Steve strolled through the lot holding hands while I trailed behind. Taylor bounced around like a rubber ball looking at cars, with her little sisters at her heels.

“Nothing too expensive,” Monica warned.

Steve waved his hand. “Oh, don’t worry about it, Bunny-Boo. I told you: Price is no object.”

With a sincere “thank-you,” my wife pulled her lover down by the collar and kissed him appreciatively. I stood by with my hands in my pockets, staring at my shoes, trying — and failing — to stave off the boner that was growing in my pants.

When their moment passed, we moseyed through the lot. A pudgy salesman approached us.

“What a lovely family you have,” he told Steve. Monica shot me a sympathetic smile.

“Thanks,” Steve said, not correcting the man, but gesturing toward Taylor. “The young lady wants something sporty, I think.”

“Well, we’ve got just what your daughter needs, sir,” the salesman responded, and this time it was Steve who glanced my way; and while I’d expected smugness, he, too, smiled compassionately.

Taylor checked out several cars, although she clearly had her heart set on a red Mustang. She seemed hesitant to mention it, though, because of the price.

Steve picked up on it, and asked the salesman if he could have some privacy — “with my family,” he said, which stung. The man complied, and Steve leaned in close to my oldest daughter.

“Listen, Tay-Tay, I don’t want him to hear this, but like I told you, price is no object, honey. If the Stang is the one you want, then that’s the one you’ll get.”

Tears came to Taylor’s eyes. Monica’s, too.

“Man, Steve … I don’t even know what to say.” Taylor wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “You’re so awesome.”

“You really are, babe,” Monica concurred.

My wife, oldest daughter and their sensei moved in for a three-way hug. Brianna and Kendell jumped into the fray. Pathetically, I joined in last, wrapping my arms around my daughters but feeling like a complete outsider.

After we broke away from each other, Steve chuckled. “Wait till that salesman finds out we plan on buying two cars. He’s gonna have a baby.”

“It’s smart to do it that way, Steve,” Brianna said, and I had no idea what she was referring to, figuring it was some negotiation strategy they’d talked about on the trip over. Not knowing what was being discussed made me feel even more left out.

Steve called the salesman back over, and the wrangling began.

“Tell you what,” Steve said. “The young lady likes that Stang; what kind of deal can you get me?”

The salesman’s eyes flickered for half a second when Steve mentioned two cars. “Um, well, sir, we can certainly work something out. Now, the sticker is forty-eight nine, but—”

Steve held up a hand. “Let’s not even talk about the sticker. Nobody pays sticker.”

The salesman blinked. “Right. Well … we do have some manufacturer incentives—”

Steve cleaned his fingernails. “I’ll give you forty-two for it.”

The salesman’s smile faltered. “Sir, I can’t do forty-two. We’d be underwater.”

Steve shrugged. “Then we’re done here.”

He started to turn away.

The salesman stepped forward. “Hold on, sir. Let me talk to my manager.”

“Before you do,” Steve added calmly, “we’re also looking at that Navigator over there.”

He pointed toward a gleaming black Lincoln parked near the showroom entrance.

Monica’s eyes widened. “Oh, Steve…”

The salesman’s face changed instantly as he contemplated the huge commission.

“That’s a beautiful vehicle,” he said. “Fully loaded.”

“Good,” Steve replied. “Because that’s what my baby deserves — and I’m going to give her what she deserves. So … what was your name?”

“Paul.”

“So, Paul, I’m looking at purchasing two vehicles. Hopefully, it’ll be here; there are five dealerships just down the road.”

“Got it, sir. Be right back.” The salesman scurried off.

Monica squeezed Steve’s arm. “Honey, that’s too much.”

“Bunny-Boo,” he said gently, “you’ve been driving a rattletrap. That thing isn’t safe. Unless you don’t want the Navigator; I didn’t mean to choose for you, I was just—”

“Oh, no, the Navigator’s fine. More than fine. Honey, are you sure? It’s so expensive.”

Steve shut her up with another kiss. I felt that familiar stirring down below.

Brianna grinned. “OMG, Mom in a Navigator!? You’ll look so hot driving that.”

“Mommy Navigator! Mommy Navigator!” Kendell sang at the top of her lungs, and everyone laughed.

The salesman returned with a man in a suit, who carried a pair of key fobs.

“Hi folks, I’m Rick, sales manager.”

Steve shook his hand firmly. “Steve.”

Rick got right to it. “Since you’re talking about buying two vehicles here, I can do forty-six on the Mustang.”

Steve didn’t blink. “Forty-three five.”

Silence.

Steve glanced at Monica. “What’s the price on the Navigator, babe?”

Monica peered at the sticker on the window. “Um …. seventy-two eight.”

Steve nodded and turned to Rick. “I’ll give you sixty-six for it, and forty-three five for the Stang.”

Rick actually laughed. “That’s not possible.”

“Come on, man, I wasn’t born yesterday. It’s very possible, and we both know it.” Steve folded his arms. “It’s December; you’ve got last year’s models sitting on the lot. You’re paying floorplan, and it’s costing you money every month.”

Rick’s smile disappeared.

“And you’ll move two units today,” Steve continued. “You’ll hit your monthly target. I know how these bonuses work.”

Rick studied him more carefully now. “Who do you sell for?”

“I don’t,” Steve replied. “I just don’t like wasting money, and I do my homework.”

There was a long pause while the two salesmen glanced at each other, and my family gazed at Steve like he was the most awesome man in the world.

Rick finally sighed. “Let me see what I can do.” He handed Taylor the key. “Would you like to take it for a spin?”

“Of course!” Taylor looked at Steve. “Is it okay?”

Steve glanced at Monica before replying, “Of course it is, Tay-Tay.”

“Paul will have to go with you, since you’re a minor,” Rick told Taylor, gesturing toward the salesman.

“Can I come?” Brianna asked Steve.

“Ask your mom.”

“Mom?”

“Yeah, go ahead.”

Kendell wailed “me, too; me, too; me, too; me, too; me, too; me, too,” until Monica told her she could accompany her big sisters for the test drive — even though it was a test drive in name only, since Taylor had fallen in love with the sportscar, and the only question was whether Steve would purchase it at this dealership or another one.

The salesman slipped into the passenger’s seat while Taylor got behind the wheel and her sisters occupied the backseat. After the car pulled out of the dealership driveway, Rick headed back to his office, his shoulders slumped.

“You’re like … a shark.” Monica told Steve after the sales manager was gone. “That was impressive, babe.”

Steve chuckled. “It’s all about reading people — and knowing what you’re talking about. I do my research whenever I do business.”

My wife smiled at me. “Wasn’t that something?”

“Yeah.” I turned to Steve. “You should’ve been a lawyer.”

“I stayed alive in Iraq by learning how to read people,” Steve said. “When you’re behind enemy lines like we were, you need to know who’s your friend and who’s not.”

“Well, it’s pretty damned impressive, the way you handled that guy,” Monica said.

In a pitiful attempt to be accepted, I added: “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Monica reached over and tucked my hair behind my ears, her way of thanking me for trying to fit in.

Rick returned with a grim line to his lips.

“Okay. Here’s what we can do. Forty-four eight on the Mustang. Sixty-eight nine on the Navigator.”

Steve didn’t respond immediately. After several seconds, he glanced at Monica. “Why don’t you take it for a spin while Rick and me work this out?”

My wife smiled at me. “Want to come?”

I tried not to gush too enthusiastically with my affirmative reply.

“Is he your brother?” Rick asked Monica as he handed over the key.

“No.” She paused. “He’s my husband.”

I cringed.

The man’s face registered shock for a split-second before he recovered.

“Um … that’s great,” he said. “Enjoy the ride.”

Monica and I got into the plush vehicle, when Rick was out of earshot, she turned to me.

“Hope that wasn’t too embarrassing. I don’t know why I said that; something just came over me.”

“It’s okay, honey,” I lied.

She giggled. “I freaked him out, huh?”

“Seemed like it,” I replied with a faux smile.

Monica glanced around. “OMG, look at this thing.”

“It’s awesome,” I said, rubbing my hand on the plush leather seat.

“I’ve never even been in a car this expensive,” Monica said. “Can you believe it?”

“Yeah, it’s pretty cool.”

As she fired up the ignition Monica glanced my way. “You okay, sweetie?”

“Um, yeah. This is … really nice. So’s the Mustang.”

“OMG, Taylor’s over the moon.”

“Yeah …” I glanced out the window at the passing scenery. “I’m a little worried about her having such a fast car, though.”

“Oh, she’ll be fine. She’s mature for her age; I don’t see her out driving like crazy, do you?”

“No, I guess not.” I chuckled. “Brianna, on the other hand …”

“Yeah, no crap.” After braking for a redlight, she looked at me. “Sorry she’s being so mean with you lately. I keep telling her to stop.”

“I know. And I appreciate it. But Steve …”

Monica scowled. “What about Steve?”

“Never mind.”

“No, say it, Pat. What about Steve?”

“Well, he seems to encourage her.”

“Who? Brianna?”

“Yeah. You always tell her to stop, but he doesn’t. He laughs.”

“What are you talking about, Pat?”

“When Brianna’s rude to me. Steve thinks it’s funny.”

“And how do you know that?”

“I can just tell. He never tells her to stop.”

“She’s not his daughter.”

“Well, he sure as hell acts like it.”

With a heavy sigh, Monica pulled the SUV into a liquor store parking lot and turned to me.

“Look, Pat, please don’t ruin this. I’m having one of the best days of my life; please don’t mess it up by starting again. You keep saying you accept everything, but then you keep whining.”

“But, honey … it’s just—”

“Just nothing. You keep going around in circles. Steve says his smoothie will help with that, but you refuse to drink it.”

“I’m not refusing, honey.”

“Then drink the damn thing, Pat. Because, frankly, I’m getting a little tired of hearing you complain about the same shit over and over again.”

“I … I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.” She put the SUV in gear and pulled out of the lot. “I know this is hard for you — but try to deal with things better, okay?”

“Okay.”

“And drink that damned smoothie when we get home.”

“Okay. I will.” Wanting dearly to change the subject, I pointed to the dashboard. “Man, look at that thing. It looks like a spaceship.”

“It’s got a seat-warmer — and a huge cupholder.” Monica grinned as she nosed the SUV back into the dealership lot. “You wouldn’t think that would matter so much, but I love it; that damn holder in my car isn’t big enough, and none of my cups ever fit.”

“I wonder what price Steve will end up negotiating?” I asked.

“I don’t know. He’s amazing, isn’t he?”

I had to admit — both to my wife and myself — that she was right.

We got out of the Navigator, and as we headed toward the dealership office, the Mustang pulled into the lot with Taylor behind the wheel grinning ear-to-ear. Her sisters wore similar expressions.

Everyone headed inside, where Steve sat across from Rick with his legs crossed, sipping a cup of coffee. Their body language told the story — our sensei had raked the poor sales manager over the coals.

Monica sat next to him, while the girls pressed their noses to the window, gawking at the car that would soon be Taylor’s. There was an empty seat next to my wife, but I decided to remain standing. I couldn’t look Rick in the eye, since he knew about our situation. But he never flinched. Rick didn’t care if we were devil-worshipers, as long as he got his commission.

Once all the paperwork was squared away and the two sales consummated, the family gathered in the lot.

“Can we ride with Taylor?” Brianna asked.

Monica glanced at Steve, who nodded.

“Go ahead,” my wife told our middle daughter.

I gritted my teeth; I hated how she deferred to her boyfriend on seemingly every decision — something she’d never done with me.

As the girls gamboled toward the Mustang, Steve clapped my shoulder. “Pattycakes, why don’t you ride home with me?”
