Why Acne Returns During Perimnopause + Menopause
Many people are surprised when acne shows up (or comes back) in their 30s, 40’s, 50’s +. Hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can increase inflammation, slow cell turnover, and cause oil production to fluctuate. the resutlt: breakouts that feel stubborn, deep, and unprdicatble.
But hormones aren’t the only factor. Mature skin becomes more reactive to environmental triggers, which can make acne worse even with a good routine.
Heat + Hot Flashes
Sudden heat increases sweat and oil production. Because mature skin sheds dead skin cells more slowly, sweat + oil + buildup = clogged pores.
Rinse or gently cleanse after sweating
Use lightweight, non-comedogenic products on hot days
Avoid heavy occlusives if you run warm
Pillowcases + Bedding
Barrier function weakens with age, so bacteria and buildup from beddding cause more inflammation than they used to.
Change pillowcases every 3- days
Wash bonnts, scarves, and satin pillowcases weekly
If you use hair oils, change pillowcases more often
Hair Products + Transfer
Many people use richer conditioners, ois, and maks as their hair changes with age. These migrate onto the face and trigger braekouts.
Touch points (More Important With Age) Mature skin is more prone to inflammatin, so friction + bacteria = breakouts.
Phone screens
Sunglasses
Headphones
Car seatbelts
Pillows
Clean these weekly to reduce jawline and cheek acne.
Towels, Makeup Tools, and Skincare Tools
Because mature skin repis itself more slowly, bacteria exposure has a bigger impact.
Switch face towels evry 2-3 days (I use facial towels that are a one and done useage)
wash amkeup brushes weekly
Clean gua sha, ice rollers, and skincare tols regularly
Bottom Line
Perimenopause and menopase acne isn’t just hormonal - it’s heavily influenced by your environment and how yoyr skin’s needs cahnge with age. Small weekly habits can reduce inflammation, prevent clogged pores, and support a stronger barrier.
