Can School Councilors send you to a psych ward?

Ive been struggling a lot lately and i cant go a (literal) minute without thinking of bad thoughts. I want to tell someone, but I don't want to bother my friends about it and if I tell the guidance counselor im worried about being sent somewhere. I'm unsure though because the last time I attempted, I only got a safety plan. Would they be able to do this? Should I tell the guidance counselor or should I just tough it out?
