What do Interior Designers look for when hiring Junior Designers?
What are the requisite qualifications a residential Interior Designers or firm looks for when hiring a junior designer or design assistant? How imperative is it for an employee to have the ID tech skills in addition to, or in place of, creative design skills?
I have an associates degree in interior design (but from 18 yrs ago), and previous junior designer (10 years ago) and retail furniture design work experience. I am considering looking for a junior designer position again (after several years away) as I do not want to run my own business right now. But, I am not sure if my skills have become outdated or not, or if it is worth the investment to take a CAD or Revit course, etc. I also don’t want to be stuck doing technical skills for an employer when really I prefer the selection and creative development aspect of the job. Any advice is greatly appreciated, I am feeling stuck! Am I qualified enough to pursue this field or should I change direction entirely?
