Moving from NYC to London in 2026/2027?

HENRY Careers

I'm currently 26 in NYC working in tech at a hedge fund. I've always wanted to live abroad at least once in my life and I'm seeing a potential opportunity to be moved over to the London office.

Big fan of the premier league and London as a city. Would be really nice to be able to more easily travel Europe as well.

Just wanted to ask if anyone recently has done this move as I noticed even at my firm, tons of Brits have moved over to NY but I don't know anyone who has done the move the other way around (guessing getting the papers ready for US -> UK is harder?)

I know financially, I'm going to have to take a hit (just not sure how much) as comp tends to be lower in the UK.

Here are some points about me

- Currently make about $215K TC and, at least in NY, I'm confident I can get that up to $300K TC by the time I'm 30. I read that ceiling is lower and comes faster in London. What comp would allow me to replicate the financial ability I have here in NY in London? Would £150k TC be reasonable?

- I currently pay around $3k for rent. Everyone in London tells me how expensive it is to live there but their lifestyles don't seem to match what they say (nice homes, nice vacations, clothes, etc...). Seems like average rent in London is £2k. I see that taxes are higher but my coworkers seem to be faring well. Cost of living seems higher than NY as my boss told me he spent 20 quid on two beers last week which seems crazy to me.

- I have no plans on settling in the UK and would plan on coming back home in max 5 years

Anyone recently moved from the US to London and can share what their experience has been like? Does it make sense for me to do this? I feel like, at this point in my life, If I don't try for something like this now, I won't be as easily able to do this later once I have a family.
