Understanding the "Twin Pillars" of Suicidal Ideation: Defeat and Entrapment.
I’ve been doing a lot of research lately into the psychological drivers of suicidal ideation, and I found a perspective that really clicked for me.
Psychologists often point to two specific emotional states that predict these thoughts: Defeat (the feeling of constant failure) and Entrapment (the perception of being stuck with no escape). When these two hit at once, the brain starts looking for a "solution" to end the pain, and that's often where the darkness creeps in.
There is also a term called “Psych-ache”—unbearable psychological anguish. It’s a reminder that most people don’t actually want to die; they just want the pain to stop.
I wrote a deeper breakdown of these "shadows" and how we can build a protective toolkit (social networks, purpose, coping mechanisms) to navigate them. If you’re struggling or supporting someone who is, understanding the biology and psychology behind it can help take some of the "shame" out of the conversation.
