Has anyone done the City of Cape Town Senior Legal Advisor pre-assessment? What should I expect?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been invited to the pre-assessment stage for the Senior Legal Advisor post at the City of Cape Town (Legal Services, Office of the City Manager). The assessment is scheduled for 5 March and is about 2 hours long.

They’ve sent me two documents in advance — the System of Delegations and the PIE Act — which I assume will form the basis of the assessment. I understand that only if you pass this stage do you qualify for an interview. I’m both excited and nervous, as I’ve applied multiple times over the years and this is the first time I’ve made it this far.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through this pre-assessment before:

  • How were the provided pieces of legislation used in the assessment?
  • Was it more practical (drafting, case analysis, contract review, etc.) or theoretical/legal knowledge?
  • Any tips on preparation?
  • How did you find the difficulty level and time pressure?

Any insights or advice would mean a lot. Thanks in advance!
