Guanfacine and sleep
I suspect hyperarousals/subtle hypervigilant state (common from concussions) being the cause of my unrefreshing sleep. Sleep medicine gave me remeron which I'm not quite convinced if it worked yet. I was asking for clonodine as I bet it was a hyperaroused nervous system and others saw success with it too for said problems.
Psychiatry had me start guanfacine before we bite the bullet and start adderall for the attention problems. All my symptoms feel like bad sleep is causing them and a PSG showed an elevated arousal index, which was previously left without follow up.
Low and behold I seem to feel much better on guanfacine even on day 3 of just 1mg xr. I don't think the attention deficit (I have no hyperactivity during the day) benefits should show yet but I think it helps with blocking norepinephrine as I sleep, letting me actually sleep. I still wake at night but my sleep feels more refreshing again and many of my symptoms are lifting quickly. Hopefully I'm not speaking too early, residual remeron should still be in me but this all started after taking guanfacine.
Turns out guanfacine seems to be very similar in action to clonodine since it blocks norepinephrine. I suspect my adhd medication accidently did what I was asking sleep medicine to do: calm my brain for restful sleep.
Anyone else have a similar story?
