Coop explained?

Hello, my wife wants to play this game with me because she saw it has coop. But, after today's reviews, I'm not sure how it works. Or the reviews I saw don't explain this or it looks like a multiplayer special mode but no like the "story" in coop.

My wife wants to play the story in the same world, together. Is this possible?

Thank you.
