Out of the loop

I havent played Yugioh since like Elemental Heroes and Jaden were a thing in the anime, does the game teach any of the newer mechanics like XYZ summoning and synchro? I just played my first ranked game and within my opponents first turn they had 2 level 8 monsters with 3000 attack points and when I was able to attack one of the weaker 500 attack point monsters they sacrificed some token off one monster and then my attack shot down to 0. like what the Frick happened
