Teaching English in Myanmar

Discussion 💬

Hey everyone! I am looking for some piece of advice.
From expats living in Myanmar or locals from the field of education.

I am from Europe and would like to resume my teaching career.
I'm holding a Bachelor's degree in Linguistics (English and French), together with a TESOL certificate obtained in Australia back in 2014. I used to teach for several years after that in Vietnam and China.

The last few years, I've been working as a software engineer, but I want to get back to teaching, feeling like it is my avocation. My direct specialization is teaching English but potentially I could teach STEM, calculus, and social sciences too (having some level of expertise in each of these fields). Asia looks like the best place for that, and I'm still nostalgic about the amazing time I spent there.

So I am considering Myanmar as one of the options. I am aware of the situation there with the war, callcenters, curfew, etc, but I can take these risks. Whoever can, kindly share some info about:

  • job locations - just Yangon and Mandalay, or provincial centres too as well as in smaller towns

  • what sort of jobs are available for now (March 2026) - public / private schools, language centers, or anything else? and how to get ones too, through agencies or contact schools directly, is more efficient?

  • visa & paperwork: do schools typically sponsor a work permit, or do you visarun every 1-2-3 months?

  • working conditions: how many hours a week are directly for teaching, together with office hours for lesson planning, etc.

  • wages: monthly, hourly rates

  • housing: typically provided by the employer or not; what's the situation overall for expats?

  • social life: locals look quite friendly, but any extra tips on how to make friends and build your social circle would be appreciated

  • driving: I am holding an international license for bike, car, and van, so I had thoughts to get myself a bike; how much difficult is that, together with obtaining a local license? in case I cannot use my international one

  • I would be grateful for any other (potential) pitfalls beyond these

Many thanks to each and every one in advance!
