Overcome temptation by shifting focus from feelings to God’s Word

I keep seeing people (and I’ve been there too) who are stuck in this cycle: temptation → fail → shame → “I don’t feel God” → try to repent → repeat.

One thing that’s helped me is realizing that God’s Word gives us a better way than “how I feel right now.”

Feelings matter, but they’re not always the truth. Jesus said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32) and “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

Also, repentance isn’t mainly “working up enough sadness.” It’s recommitting to God’s way, even if you fall again ten minutes later. It means staying with God not turning back.

A simple illustration: if you quit smoking and someone offers you a cigarette, you can say:

  • “No, I’m trying to quit.” (focuses on struggle)
  • “No, I’m not a smoker.” (speaks from a new identity)

In Christ, Scripture says you’re not just “trying to change.” You’re already made new:
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Cor 5:17).

So instead of letting your inner dialogue be:

  • “I messed up again, I must be fake.” Try replacing it with the truth:
    • I am a new creation (2 Cor 5:17)
    • Nothing can separate me from God’s love (Rom 8:38–39)
    • I can come boldly for mercy and help (Heb 4:14–16)
    • God’s Spirit lives in me (1 Cor 3:16)

This is basically Romans 12:2 in real life: renewing your mind until your thoughts line up with what God says is true.

Not instant perfection—but real transformation over time.

If you’re struggling, what’s one verse that helps you remember who you are in Christ?
