Sports Shouldn’t Feel Like the Stock Market

Actual Sports Talk🎙️

Not sure if anyone else read that NYT story about Giannis Antetokounmpo taking a stake in a Kalshi prediction market (it’s basically like a betting exchange where you can trade on outcomes including sports).

The article highlights how this kind of financialization of sports - especially with star players involved - blurs the line between the game itself and wagerable commodities.

To me, this is exactly one of the reasons sports feel less enjoyable lately. Instead of being about competition and fans cheering for athletes, it gets tangled up in betting markets, speculation, and gambling incentives. When the narrative around a player or game becomes “what will the market price say?” instead of “what happened on the court?” it sucks a lot of the joy and purity out of watching. Sports shouldn’t feel like Wall Street. Thoughts?
